Top 10 of 2015

FullSizeRenderLast year I returned to work with a mixture of positive and negative feelings. On the positive side, I was able to rejoin the beauty world on a professional level and get myself back out there making my connections and learning all about new products and techniques. I also managed to get back into a regular beauty routine.

In addition to my professional exposure to beauty items, I also was so inspired by social media and other bloggers to try some new things. Instagram, YouTube and beauty blogs lead me down the road to seek out some of the items on this list, while others fell into my hands unexpectedly.

Here are my top 10 picks of 2015.  This list covers a good range of products and brands, and there is something in this list for any budget. I hope you enjoy!

1. Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour – 444 Gabrielle
RougeCoco2015_collection

Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour is a gorgeous, buttery lipstick that hydrates for hours, and the shade 444 Gabrielle is a stunning red. Read about my journey towards finding the lipstick here, and enjoy the full review.

2. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, Custard0607845012344

Coverage? Check! Easy to apply? Check! A vast array of shades to choose from? Check! I call my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard my sleep in a tube. A sweep of this magic wand will make under eye darkness disappear quicker than you can say “Put another pot of coffee on.”  Visit my full story on this concealer here.

3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit- Light To Medium contour_kit_powder

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit has traveled to other countries with me. I love the versatility of it and it is super slim and easy to pack. I know there’s a plethora of contour products out there to choose from right now as it is all the rage, but this one caught my eye early on when I saw it plastered all over gorgeously sculpted faces on Instagram. Check out my review of it here, where you will also see some before and after photos!

4.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

Liquid lipsticks are showing up in every brand right now. They are touted to be matte, highly pigmented and long wearing. The unfortunate part is, this trifecta of liptick promises rarely comes to fruition.  That is, until I tried Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks.

Ladies and gentleman, these simply do not disappoint. They are not easy for us Canadian Foxes to get our hands on as you can read about here, but I tell you that if you are so lucky to get one, you will see how it rises above so many others.

Line It Up

Trends aside, I have always been a fan of the liquid eyeliner. I love how it creates a strong definition and adds a little glam. I have tried many liquid eyeliners over the past 20 years, and usually I have issues with the length of wear, the applicator or the formula bothers my eyes. The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is a winner that hits everything out of the park without any “side effects” of my common issue. white

The applicator tip is precise and flexible and this allows me to can create a thin or thick line, and a cat eye in a cinch! It stays on like the name states – all day, and I have not experienced ANY smudging! The formula is some magical elixir that doesn’t bother my ultra – sensitive eyes, and I have even used in my lower water line without issue (on occasion, not often!).

IMG_8300I have taken cuticle scissors to trim off the fraying, and although this works to clean it up the application tip is compromised and I don;t get the same precision.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is definitely a makeup bag staple for me from now on. I only use black, but it is also available in several other colours. The Midnight shade ( a deep blue) is calling my name….

Do you use a liquid eyeliner? Which one is your fave?

Mascara Blast

Cover Girl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara came into my hands by chance. I had a false eyelash/mascara crisis at work and someone gave me this Cover Girl mascara. I was worried to try it as my eyes are crazy sensitive and it had a weird looking brush. Out of desperation I applied this to my lashes and it seemed to do the trick, although difficult to really tell what it was really like since I had globs of lash adhesive stuck in my eyelashes.

cg_super_sizer_1I tried it again the following day and was pleasantly surprised with the ease of application as well  as the result. That weird little brush surprising delivered the formula to my lashes with easy precision and the formula really bulked up to give me a nice amount of volume. The smudge proof factor is there too! It doesn’t smudge all day, even on my lower lashes, and this

I had been using $30+ mascaras for at least 10 years now, so I was pleasantly surprised when this affordable one was able to wow me. I found the only downside for me is that it seems to be good for only  about a month before my eyes start to get irritated. I simply toss it, pay less than $10 for a new one and everything is right in the world again.

Tell me about a time a beauty product performed better than expected for you. Help me build a new shopping list!

The Hottest Lip Trend Hits Mass Cosmetics

Revlon simply never lets me down. It is a consistent and reliable brand, with product offerings at an affordable price point. When it comes to their lip products, I would dare say they rival the most prestigious brands. They are constantly innovating and on trend, while deeply rooted in their classics (Coffee Bean or Toast of New York anyone?).

CaptureI saw a displayer of their newest lip product in a drugstore. Since it was Revlon lip, I stopped dead in my tracks to check it out. The colour I wanted was sold out, but as luck would have it, someone came and filled it while I was there, so I just had to buy it! See? The Cosmetic gods were telling me to buy it so it’s not hoarding. IMG_8300

The Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor goes on like a lip gloss and feels lovely. The scent is actually quite delicious as well ( a little fruity). It goes on remarkably well with a beautiful pigmentation. At first it looks a little shiny, but in no time it sets matte. I bought only one shade (aptly named Addiction), but will be returning for the rest shortly.

I would describe the wearability as medium… it stays on well but isn’t super long lasting. This suits me just fine as I found that this is a blend of all things great from both moisturizing and long – wearing lipsticks, which isn’t something I have seen before. Kudos to Revlon for another fantastic lip product, and I will be back to the store to pick up the rest of the shades soon!

Have you used a Revlon lip product before? What are your thoughts?

Here’s How I Apply Foundation Now…

At some point in the early 2000s, I was convinced that using makeup sponges (those little wedges) to apply my foundation was passé and the ONLY way to apply it properly was using a foundation brush.  I admit using a brush was an improvement over those triangular wedges. My brush choices have really evolved over the years from the flat syntBBhetic brush you would paint on makeup in strokes, to a fluffier synthetic brush which buffs on foundation to an airbrushed finish!

I have seen the Beauty Blender sponge in stores and of course all over social media, but I can honestly say I have not tried it yet. This video tutorial inspired me to try out a sponge in the first place, and I am sure I will love the Beauty Blender, hwthumbbut the cost ($26) is what’s holding me back (although not for long!)

In the meantime, I have been using the Quo Blending Sponge. I am convince on using this method of blending foundation, and the Quo Blending Sponge is only around $5! I use it by soaking it with water and wringing it out, and then repeating this a few times. I like to wring it out only about 95% of the way, leaving a little bit of water in it. Then, I dot my foundation on my face with a cotton swab and proceed to use the sponge to blend it in. Alternating between using tapping and rolling motions, I work that foundation all over my face until it is totally blended and looks flawless. I manipulate the sponge using different angles depending on where I am blending on my face.

The effect is airbrushed and flawless looking. I used to think sponges were ineffective and only a foundation brush could do the trick, but the Quo Blending Sponge has made me rethink everything I know about sponges. It is easy to clean with a little soap and water, and lasts a long time. Eventually it will start to show wear and tear, but at this price it is not painful to replace.

Tell me Foxes, how do you like to blend?

Ready, SET, Go!

matte_powder_mediumCover FX Matte Setting Powder is is a not a new product, but it is one that I have added to my regular regime in the past year. In the past, I used the Cover FX Illuminating Setting Powder. With trends changing recently to a more matte finish with precision highlighting, I opted for the matte one when I was replacing it.

I love this powder so much. It is totally sheer and does not disrupt the colour of my foundation. It is easy to choose a shade as it only comes in three colours, and all which are sheer so you can not go too wrong. The powder is so lightweight with an incredibly fine texture, almost like a dust. When applied over my foundation or tinted moisturizer, it instantly transforms my skin so it feels totally natural like I have nothing one – no stickiness or texture, just feels like my skin.

Let’s talk about the brilliant packaging for a moment. One of my pet peeves is with a loose powder is that it gets everywhere, especially when you travel. This one has a cover that twists over the dispenser to shut it, or to allow just a few holes exposed to control how much comes out. I travel all over with this powder and have never had so much as a trickle of a leak!

This powder is a keeper that will be a staple of my makeup bag forever, either in its matte form or illuminating form… or both!

Foxy Friends, tell me how you set your makeup?

Liquid Lipstick Phenomena

Scrolling through Instagram in 2015, I saw  Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipsticks all over my feed. They look great in the pictures, but it is difficult to tell what they will really be like as so many pictures are photo-shopped or taken when the application is fresh. In my experience long wear lipsticks make my lips look parched and peel off in chunks throughout the day. Also, they tend to have tricky formulas that require a close to perfect application.

pure_hollywood_off_copyMy hubby Fox is a pilot and was in the US for the night, and there ABH lipsticks are not available in Canada. So, of course I send him out on a mission to pick me up 3 shades. He tried so many places that carry this brand only to find out that they are so popular that the stores can’t even keep the testers on the shelf without them getting stolen.

After hours of searching and by some miracle, he found two of the shades I wanted at  Macy’s. The third one I wanted was being held for another customer behind the counter, she was late picking it up and was known to be the LAST ONE IN THE STATE! Hubby Fox did some sweet talking and walked away with all three shades! I got PURE HOLLYWOOD (pictured) which at the time, was going for close to quadruple the price on eBay.

I can honestly say, I have NEVER used anything else like these. First of all, the applicator allows for a  precision application. Next, the colour pay off is outstanding with a rich matte pigment that is true to what you see in the tube. To apply, I just put a little bit onto the bottom lip and then quickly touch the top and bottom together to spread the colour. Then using the applicator, I spread it around and fill in the entire lip with accuracy. In the unlikely event that I need to apply more colour I can and the texture doesn’t go weird like it can with other liquid lipsticks I have used!201511123521690501075778_sbig

It stays on all day and does not look much worse for wear at the end of the day. I love that it is a liquid, and I can take a dollop of several colours and mix them up to customize a tone. I have since sent hubby Fox on a mission for more wintery colours… but no luck! I even had some kind hearted Facebook friends look for them on their adventures to the US and everyone comes up empty handed. The only downside of the amazing product is the lack of availability.

Am I the only one who chases down beauty products in another country? Have you ever hunted something down that was hard to find? Tell me about it!
