Day 25: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Merry Christmas to those of you Foxes who are celebrating today! I hope each and every one of you has a wonderful holiday season whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or just the fact that you have a few days off of work! This post is going up a little early so I can test it out and promote it on my social media tonight, leaving my Christmas morning and all day free to enjoy with my Little Foxes and my big Hunky Fox (that’s a test to see if he actually reads my blog).

The final tip in our Foxy Advent Calendar comes from the pros at Elizabeth Arden. Many of you may have received fragrances as a gift this season and maybe you even received one of those gift sets with the extra items and you aren’t 100% sold on their value. Well, to ensure that you make the most out of those fragrances sets is a tip from Elizabeth Arden experts:

“Layer your fragrance! Lather on the lotion version of your favourite fragrance before spiritzing on your perfume. This will help your fragrance last longer rather than overdoing it with the juice. You can also enjoy taking a relaxing shower utilizing the fragrance shower gel to bring out the essence of the fragrance.”

I wanted to take this opportunity to think all of you Foxes for your support with this endeavour and for your encouragement along the way.

Day 24: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

slide_24_2092059aJenny Frankel is a beauty legend creator and you have probably worn at least one of the products that this chemical engineer helped to create at some point in your life (Lipglass anyone?). Her business acumen, her know how around a chemistry lab and love affair with the beauty industry helped birth a new product line that is genius in it’s simplicity. If you read the Day 20 post, you have already met her daughters and muses, Ally and Taylor. Their approach to makeup was fresh and natural, and together with their mom they made a user friendly line that is beautiful for all ages called NUDESTIX. Heck, I am almost (gulp) 40 and find this line enchanting because of it’s effortless application and natural, yet finished look. Here is the Day 24 tip from Jenny:

“For an instant lift that takes seconds – use your pencil as a highlighter. I like to apply NUDESTIX Magnetic Eye Color in Angel under and above my brow bone, on my cheek bones, down the centre of my nose, bow of my lips and centre of my bottom lip. Just draw and smudge and I look immediately fresh and brighter.”

In the darkest days on winter I will definitely try anything to look fresher and brighter. Thanks for the easy tip Jenny!

So Foxes, do you use a highlighter? Where do you like to apply it? Do share, and stay tuned for the last tip tomorrow along with a giveaway!

Day 23: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Teresa Browning Johnston has worked for 20 years as a makeup artist, and is currently the Beauty Boutique Manager at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Tecumseh, Ontario. In addition to delighting her lucky store customers, Teresa is providing us with the Day 23 Tip. This will keep your mascara from being contaminated and drying out making it last much longer, and in the long run Foxes, this one will be saving you some of your hard earned money!

10514288_10152163806707477_4343223163923463846_o“I pull the mascara wand out and spin the wand on the back of my hand removing ALL mascara. This creates a pile of the formula on my hand. I then dip wand into loose product and then apply to lashes. I get less clumps and more product at base of lash to build a false lash look..repeat on second lash. You only have to pull your wand once, therefore not pushing unnecessary air in to your mascara tube (which can dry it out faster). PLUS, any additional product left on hand, I use as a gel liner. Works perfect!!!”

This is a cool trick I am going to have to try out for myself! Thanks so much Teresa!

Foxes, on the topic of mascara, how long do you keep yours before you replace it? Did you know it should be disposed of within 3 months?

Day 22: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

With Sonya Zaffino working as a Specialist at Sephora, the Foxes in Kingston, Ontario have never looked so…well, Foxy! When she isn’t doling out top notch advice from her 16 years of experience in beauty, Sonya volunteers with a local chapter of Look Good Feel Better as a consultant. Lucky for us she had the time to provide us with the Day 22 tip:

“Do you ever get super staticky hair in those winter months??? The key to combating this problem is to have lots of moisture in the hair when it is dry. The more moisture, the less likely you are to have static. One way to achieve static free hair is by using a leave in conditioner, apply as per the product directions but best if applied in the steamy shower air. Another item you can try is a moisture control styling cream product applied to towel dried hair. Mix it with a few drops of your favourite oil such as Ojon or Kendi oils and voila! Your hair is hydrated. Another few drops of oil applied to the ends of dried hair also helps to lock in that moisture and keep staticky flyaways at bay.”

We have another hair expert! This is good news my Foxy Friends, I will take all of the hair advice that I can get.

What about you, Foxes, do you use an oil or serum in your hair? What kind?

Day 21: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Lucky Foxes – your Day 21 beauty tip is from a beauty industry rock star. With close to thirty experience in the beauty industry, Douglas Atkinson continues to bring a unique and refreshing perspective to an ever – changing business. I first met Doug in 2005 when he won a COSA for Trainer of the Year. He was the life of the party over with his quick wit, classic movie quotes and sense of humour with an edge.

As a makeup expert and trainer, Doug has worked with many of the top beauty brands in Canada. He was the official makeup artist of TV’s “Diva on a Dime” and has made numerous television appearances and been the star of many media events. He has also been a featured guest in most of the beauty retailers all across the country where throngs of women would be waiting for their time with Doug. He is able to connect with them and make the meeting about so much more than just makeup and skin care, and he lets the women shine!

Doug2pic1“I have to say that in the 28 years that I have been in the cosmetic industry that I have seen trends come and go and then return again but one thing remains constant and that is the constant desire to capture and retain beauty. Billions of dollars a year are spent on products to enhance sallow or tired complexions, reduce the sun damage that we incurred in our youth, lift a sagging jawline or fix the look of tired eyes or large pores. Trust me,  I have done thousands of makeovers with hundreds of different products and some are worth the money.

To that point,  I have had the opportunity again to experience the Darphin line of products and there are some incredible secret weapons in their line up. One of the best is the “Dark Circles Relief and De-puffing Eye Serum” . This wonderful gel actually does help with puffiness and dark circles and the result is almost instant! It doesn’t crack or get tight on the eye and it makes a visible difference if you have the issue(s) that it addresses. Is it worth a hundred dollars??? In my opinion , YES! So what if you burn the candle at both ends. Use this and even if you fall asleep at your desk you will still look good!

Another item that is worth the spend is from Dior. For years, the consumer in the know has come to the Dior counter and asked for the eponymous ‘Crème Abricot’. This odd orange butter-like looking substance in a round white container has a cult following. One thing that I noticed about the people buying it, women and men alike, is how well groomed their cuticles and nails looked. No hangnails. No ragged edges. A pot can last you long time if you are careful. Dab it on the cuticles and nails and keep them looking like you just left the shop. Is it worth $30+ ?? YES! Something you need to have in your beauty arsenal at all times . No matter what you spend on polish or what the trend is in colour if your cuticles don’t look good and aren’t in top condition your manicure will look like a ‘mani-can’t’. Worth it!”

Just in time to add to your list for some great stocking stuffers! My cuticles are absolutely ravaged this time of year and I am always so tired with the two little Foxes that live in my den – off I go to add more to my exploding collection!

What about you Foxes, would you spend $100 on an eye cream? What is the most you have spent on any skin care item?

Day 20: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Well my Foxy Friends, we are only five days away from the big day! I trust that you have most of your shopping done… yeah I know, neither do I! Well maybe today’s tip will help you decide on a stocking stuffer for one of your Foxy Friends.

Ally and Taylor Frankel are sisters and the inspiration/ founders behind NUDESTIX. This brand is a simple collection of easy-to-use makeup crayons that cover all the bases and give you a fresh-faced, nude look that works for all faces, that you can apply in all places. Enriched with skin-saving vitamins, antioxidants and moisturizers, each multipurpose NUDESTIX is loaded with just enough colour to go nude, but better. Here is a tip from Ally and Taylor:

_ADL8598-R2-F“Smokey eye does not have to mean shades of black. Smokey neutrals are the new black for the eye. Neutrals make a great smokey look for both day and night! Smokey, luminous, sheer washes of neutral gold’s, plums, taupe’s, browns, greys and even smudgy black where you can see your skin is on trend.

We like to use a black, bronze and gold eye cream based eye color that’s super blend able, fast and easy to apply a no-makeup makeup eye that looks just slept in. We like to use concealer first all over the eye as a base; then use your highlighting pencil all over lid, use black on the water line and take your finger to smudge it slightly outside of the waterline and beneath the eye for #iwokeuplikethis look! Try the Nudestix #GILTYLOVE holiday eye kit featuring the Magnetic Eye Colour in Night, Twilght and Gilt.”

Well said ladies! It is refreshing to see a neutral smokey eye and I think we are all a little tired of trying to perfect the smokey eye of the past with the shades of black as you mentioned.

How about you Foxes, do you or will you be trying a neutral smokey eye for yourself? I can’t wait to try this look!

Day 19: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Patrice Boudreau brings us our Day 19 beauty tip. Consider this tip a teaser to a more thorough post in the future which cover all that you need to know about foundation.

As a professional freelance makeup artist, Patrice has been working in television and on feature films for the past 20 years. You may have seen some of his work in Robocop or on the TV series Suits. I was fortunate to meet and work with Patrice when he was a full-time makeup artist for Clarins. He was the star attraction of events in my store, and women loved getting their makeup done by Patrice because of his talent, professionalism and of how he made them feel like a star themselves!

“When looking for a new foundation, you need to be prepared and keep in mind these 3 fundamental choices:

  1. What kind of coverage am I looking for? Do you have anything to camouflage or are you simply looking for something to enhance your complexion? Maybe you are looking to refine the texture of your skin and have the foundation make it look smoother?
  2. What texture do I prefer on my skin? There are different textures available now to meet the needs of the most demanding customer. They range from the ever so light mousse foundations to the most comforting of creams, and don’t forget the practical powders.
  3. What is the final result I am looking for? Are you expecting your face to stay matte all day? Maybe you prefer a radiant look or that of a sparkling star on the red carpet – just keep in mind what you want your result to be.”

Foundation can be a tricky purchase for a lot of people, and it is certainly good to go in shopping prepared and with some ideas of your own. Thanks Patrice and looking forward to more from you!

Foxy Friends – are you happy with your foundation? Why or why not? Tell me…
