Top 10 of 2015

FullSizeRenderLast year I returned to work with a mixture of positive and negative feelings. On the positive side, I was able to rejoin the beauty world on a professional level and get myself back out there making my connections and learning all about new products and techniques. I also managed to get back into a regular beauty routine.

In addition to my professional exposure to beauty items, I also was so inspired by social media and other bloggers to try some new things. Instagram, YouTube and beauty blogs lead me down the road to seek out some of the items on this list, while others fell into my hands unexpectedly.

Here are my top 10 picks of 2015.  This list covers a good range of products and brands, and there is something in this list for any budget. I hope you enjoy!

1. Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour – 444 Gabrielle

Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour is a gorgeous, buttery lipstick that hydrates for hours, and the shade 444 Gabrielle is a stunning red. Read about my journey towards finding the lipstick here, and enjoy the full review.

2. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, Custard0607845012344

Coverage? Check! Easy to apply? Check! A vast array of shades to choose from? Check! I call my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard my sleep in a tube. A sweep of this magic wand will make under eye darkness disappear quicker than you can say “Put another pot of coffee on.”  Visit my full story on this concealer here.

3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit- Light To Medium contour_kit_powder

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit has traveled to other countries with me. I love the versatility of it and it is super slim and easy to pack. I know there’s a plethora of contour products out there to choose from right now as it is all the rage, but this one caught my eye early on when I saw it plastered all over gorgeously sculpted faces on Instagram. Check out my review of it here, where you will also see some before and after photos!

4.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

Liquid lipsticks are showing up in every brand right now. They are touted to be matte, highly pigmented and long wearing. The unfortunate part is, this trifecta of liptick promises rarely comes to fruition.  That is, until I tried Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks.

Ladies and gentleman, these simply do not disappoint. They are not easy for us Canadian Foxes to get our hands on as you can read about here, but I tell you that if you are so lucky to get one, you will see how it rises above so many others.

matte_powder_medium5. Cover FX Matte Setting Powder

Not new to the market, but a discovery of mine in 2015. I rave about it here, and can tell you that this super – fine powder is a keeper that will be a staple of my makeup bag forever, either in its matte form or illuminating form… or both!

6. Quo Blending Spongehwthumb

Initially chosen as a stand – in for the pricier Beauty Blender sponge, I can honesty say that this one is a winner on it’s own! Effective blending at a cost that any pocketbook can handle, the Quo Blending Sponge is a an easy way to shake up your foundation routine and try a new trick.

Learn all about how I use this sponge here and take a little time to rethink the makeup sponge!

7. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyelinerwhite

Oh the quest for the perfect liquid liner came to an end once I found the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner . This is a gem that I stock up on and keep reserves in my desk just in case. Love love love this liner! Want to learn more about this liner? Check out this link for more!

8. Revlon Ultra HD Matte LipcolorCapture

I discovered Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor only days before 2015 came to an end, so this one was close. This one was also impressive enough to make the list and bump something else off! I have been a life long supporter of Revlon products, particular their lipsticks. I rave about this new one here.

9. Benefit Instant Comeback Facial Serum

whiteSeriously, I did not have high expectations from a brand known more for it’s cutesy packaging and makeup items. What a wonderful surprise this serum gave me! You can read the full details of this unexpected winner here and find out how this not – so – new product even found it’s way onto my 2015 list. There’s always a story and this one really speaks to the power of a sample!

10. Cover Girl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara

cg_super_sizer_1This was the year of surprises! I never would have thought that Cover Girl would end up on my list as I thought this was a brand that was from my teen years only. Well, here I am a lifetime later and being wowed by this affordable and impressive mascara. Wanna know more about it? Liquid Lipstick Phenomena

Scrolling through Instagram in 2015, I saw  Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipsticks all over my feed. They look great in the pictures, but it is difficult to tell what they will really be like as so many pictures are photo-shopped or taken when the application is fresh. In my experience long wear lipsticks make my lips look parched and peel off in chunks throughout the day. Also, they tend to have tricky formulas that require a close to perfect application.

pure_hollywood_off_copyMy hubby Fox is a pilot and was in the US for the night, and there ABH lipsticks are not available in Canada. So, of course I send him out on a mission to pick me up 3 shades. He tried so many places that carry this brand only to find out that they are so popular that the stores can’t even keep the testers on the shelf without them getting stolen.

After hours of searching and by some miracle, he found two of the shades I wanted at  Macy’s. The third one I wanted was being held for another customer behind the counter, she was late picking it up and was known to be the LAST ONE IN THE STATE! Hubby Fox did some sweet talking and walked away with all three shades! I got PURE HOLLYWOOD (pictured) which at the time, was going for close to quadruple the price on eBay.

I can honestly say, I have NEVER used anything else like these. First of all, the applicator allows for a  precision application. Next, the colour pay off is outstanding with a rich matte pigment that is true to what you see in the tube. To apply, I just put a little bit onto the bottom lip and then quickly touch the top and bottom together to spread the colour. Then using the applicator, I spread it around and fill in the entire lip with accuracy. In the unlikely event that I need to apply more colour I can and the texture doesn’t go weird like it can with other liquid lipsticks I have used!201511123521690501075778_sbig

It stays on all day and does not look much worse for wear at the end of the day. I love that it is a liquid, and I can take a dollop of several colours and mix them up to customize a tone. I have since sent hubby Fox on a mission for more wintery colours… but no luck! I even had some kind hearted Facebook friends look for them on their adventures to the US and everyone comes up empty handed. The only downside of the amazing product is the lack of availability.

Am I the only one who chases down beauty products in another country? Have you ever hunted something down that was hard to find? Tell me about it!

So You Wanna Contour?

Contour is everywhere, and there are so many different beauty products you can use to achieve a sculpted look – matte neutral eyeshadows, bronzers, foundations, concealers, face powders, etc. Having an actual contour product is not necessary, yet I found myself seeking out a specific contour  and highlighting palette (hoarder problems).

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit was being featured all over social media and by bloggers and vloggers alike, so in true compulsive fashion I ran out to get my hands on one for myself. It was my lucky day, since there was only one Light to Medium palette left on the shelf.

This kit has three shades for highlighting and three for contouring. I love that there is variety in the highlighting shades, and one of them is matte. The other two have a soft shimmer, but are not over the top. I use the shimmery ones on top of my cheekbones, under the brow, and above the center of my lips. The matte one is a banana shade which is absolutely PERFECT to set my undereye concealer. Read all about my fave concealer here.

As for the three contour shades, I am drawn most to the one in the center, but I use all three of them interchangeably. I can’t really tout the value of one over the other as I find all of them look very similar once blended. I know a lot of people use these as a contour on the eye lids as well, but due to my eye sensitivities I have not even tried this myself.

photo 3To illustrate the power of a contour and highlight, in the side by side photo you can see my face with no makeup at all and then the final result. The single photo shows the contour placement before I blended it in). photo 5I love the contour and highlight palette to give my round face some shape and definition. The powder is very pigmented,  applies easily and blends very well.

It takes time and commitment to blend in a contour application and I have to say I have improved my technique vastly since these photos, but I haven’t had much time to document the improved process.

Lastly, I want to touch on the slimness of this compact. This makes it a perfect travel companion vs. bulky or boxy powders, and it doesn’t take up much real estate at home either. I actually like to store this and other flat compacts on end likes books on a shelf.

Did the contouring trend influence you to try it out for yourself? Or maybe you were already doing it? Let me know!

Product Review: Anastasia Brow Dip Pomade Blonde

In case you did not already know this about me, I am pretty obsessed with finding a perfect brow product. I have  invisi-brows and require some sort of product to make me feel like I am part of the human race. Last  year, one of my most popular posts was when I wrote about how I loved Benefit’s Gimme Brow for a more natural look. That still stands and I continue to use it on my no make-up days (which are really light make-up days), but I have totally bought into the hype of the Anastasia Brow Dip!

Let me back up a little…. I first heard about Anastasia Soare years ago when she was on the Oprah Winfrey show. She was the brow guru to the stars and commanded all things brow even before brows were a big thing. She came to the US from Romania and did not speak English, but through perseverance and a laser-focus on success, she built her brand from plucking brows to a beauty empire known as Anastasia Beverly Hills. Check out this article to learn more about her story.

Anastasia products are probably the ones I see the most on my Instagram feed. Bloggers, makeup artists and beauty junkies all love these products and the results shown look absolutely beautiful. I figure a lady who started out as an aesthetician plucking brows who went on to build such formidable brand would really know a thing or two about the perfect brow products. Her selection of brow products is unparalleled in the industry in both formulations and shade selection. There is literally something for everyone in this line up and nobody has to compromise a thing.

photo 2-4I picked up the Brow Dip Pomade in Blonde well over a month ago. It comes in a little glass jar with a screw on lid, presumably to keep it airtight as these types of products can dry out quickly if not protected from air. I will admit there was a bit of a learning curve with the Brow Dip and I had to revisit some YouTube tutorials several times over to get the hang of it. But now that I get it, I am never turning back to a brow powder! Nothing compares to this product for look, wearability and longevity. There are many shades and I have noticed that some prominent makeup artist bloggers even use two at a time to create a natural graduated look. Brow Dip stays on… and on…. and on. This stuff just does not dissipate or rub off easily, and if you are brow challenged like me you will appreciate still having them where they should be by day’s end.

I had to play with several different brushes before I found the one that worked well with this product. At first I tried a natural hair angle brush, but found that the pomade would clump up on it rather quickly, even with cleaning it in between uses. I ended up using a synthetic angle brush, and wipe it clean with an eye makeup remover every 2-3 uses to keep it working well. After dipping the brush in the pomade, I wipe some of it off on the inside of the lid to keep as little product as possible on the brush. You do not need a lot of this stuff to do the job!

Steps 2 and 3 completed

Step 1 – With my brush I apply a very light feathery touch of the Brow Dip to about 3/4 of my brow, leaving the very inside for last. I sketch a light line to form a guideline, and then Step 2– move the product around with the brush and feathery strokes to create the fullness. At the end, Step 3– I go back in with my brush to fill in the inner part of my brow closer to my nose. If I require more pomade, I simply work off of the lid rather than re-dipping into the pomade itself. I have to say that I think I will end up buying the Brow Wiz by Anastasia also to help do this part as Brow Wiz allows for a more precise application.

Completed brows (and mascara added too)

A final step is to create a clean line under and over your brow by applying a thin line of concealer with a tiny brush. Gently blend the concealer and voila- brows that frame the face beautifully! I can see this product in my life for a long time, and will likely change it up by trying out slightly darker shades when my hair has it’s seasonal darkening in the fall. I really would love to try all of the products that Anastasia Beverly Hills has to offer and hope that the entire line-up will become more readily available in Canada.

Can anyone out there confirm that I am not the only one faking my brows? Please Foxy Friends…. let me know!
