Top 10 of 2015

FullSizeRenderLast year I returned to work with a mixture of positive and negative feelings. On the positive side, I was able to rejoin the beauty world on a professional level and get myself back out there making my connections and learning all about new products and techniques. I also managed to get back into a regular beauty routine.

In addition to my professional exposure to beauty items, I also was so inspired by social media and other bloggers to try some new things. Instagram, YouTube and beauty blogs lead me down the road to seek out some of the items on this list, while others fell into my hands unexpectedly.

Here are my top 10 picks of 2015.  This list covers a good range of products and brands, and there is something in this list for any budget. I hope you enjoy!

1. Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour – 444 Gabrielle

Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour is a gorgeous, buttery lipstick that hydrates for hours, and the shade 444 Gabrielle is a stunning red. Read about my journey towards finding the lipstick here, and enjoy the full review.

2. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer, Custard0607845012344

Coverage? Check! Easy to apply? Check! A vast array of shades to choose from? Check! I call my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard my sleep in a tube. A sweep of this magic wand will make under eye darkness disappear quicker than you can say “Put another pot of coffee on.”  Visit my full story on this concealer here.

3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit- Light To Medium contour_kit_powder

The Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit has traveled to other countries with me. I love the versatility of it and it is super slim and easy to pack. I know there’s a plethora of contour products out there to choose from right now as it is all the rage, but this one caught my eye early on when I saw it plastered all over gorgeously sculpted faces on Instagram. Check out my review of it here, where you will also see some before and after photos!

4.  Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

Liquid lipsticks are showing up in every brand right now. They are touted to be matte, highly pigmented and long wearing. The unfortunate part is, this trifecta of liptick promises rarely comes to fruition.  That is, until I tried Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks.

Ladies and gentleman, these simply do not disappoint. They are not easy for us Canadian Foxes to get our hands on as you can read about here, but I tell you that if you are so lucky to get one, you will see how it rises above so many others.

matte_powder_medium5. Cover FX Matte Setting Powder

Not new to the market, but a discovery of mine in 2015. I rave about it here, and can tell you that this super – fine powder is a keeper that will be a staple of my makeup bag forever, either in its matte form or illuminating form… or both!

6. Quo Blending Spongehwthumb

Initially chosen as a stand – in for the pricier Beauty Blender sponge, I can honesty say that this one is a winner on it’s own! Effective blending at a cost that any pocketbook can handle, the Quo Blending Sponge is a an easy way to shake up your foundation routine and try a new trick.

Learn all about how I use this sponge here and take a little time to rethink the makeup sponge!

7. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyelinerwhite

Oh the quest for the perfect liquid liner came to an end once I found the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner . This is a gem that I stock up on and keep reserves in my desk just in case. Love love love this liner! Want to learn more about this liner? Check out this link for more!

8. Revlon Ultra HD Matte LipcolorCapture

I discovered Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor only days before 2015 came to an end, so this one was close. This one was also impressive enough to make the list and bump something else off! I have been a life long supporter of Revlon products, particular their lipsticks. I rave about this new one here.

9. Benefit Instant Comeback Facial Serum

whiteSeriously, I did not have high expectations from a brand known more for it’s cutesy packaging and makeup items. What a wonderful surprise this serum gave me! You can read the full details of this unexpected winner here and find out how this not – so – new product even found it’s way onto my 2015 list. There’s always a story and this one really speaks to the power of a sample!

10. Cover Girl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara

cg_super_sizer_1This was the year of surprises! I never would have thought that Cover Girl would end up on my list as I thought this was a brand that was from my teen years only. Well, here I am a lifetime later and being wowed by this affordable and impressive mascara. Wanna know more about it? Of course you can read all about it here, where I go into details about the Super Sizer!

That wraps up my top 10 of 2015… I would love to hear about YOUR favourite discoveries over the past year. Tell me about them in the comments or visit my Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (Foxy Face Beauty for all) and let me know!

The Hottest Lip Trend Hits Mass Cosmetics

Revlon simply never lets me down. It is a consistent and reliable brand, with product offerings at an affordable price point. When it comes to their lip products, I would dare say they rival the most prestigious brands. They are constantly innovating and on trend, while deeply rooted in their classics (Coffee Bean or Toast of New York anyone?).

CaptureI saw a displayer of their newest lip product in a drugstore. Since it was Revlon lip, I stopped dead in my tracks to check it out. The colour I wanted was sold out, but as luck would have it, someone came and filled it while I was there, so I just had to buy it! See? The Cosmetic gods were telling me to buy it so it’s not hoarding. IMG_8300

The Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor goes on like a lip gloss and feels lovely. The scent is actually quite delicious as well ( a little fruity). It goes on remarkably well with a beautiful pigmentation. At first it looks a little shiny, but in no time it sets matte. I bought only one shade (aptly named Addiction), but will be returning for the rest shortly.

I would describe the wearability as medium… it stays on well but isn’t super long lasting. This suits me just fine as I found that this is a blend of all things great from both moisturizing and long – wearing lipsticks, which isn’t something I have seen before. Kudos to Revlon for another fantastic lip product, and I will be back to the store to pick up the rest of the shades soon!

Have you used a Revlon lip product before? What are your thoughts?

Judgement Day: 2015 Resolutions I Actually Kept….

Last year at this time I made my 2015 Beauty Resolutions public, as if stating them to the world would cause me to actually follow-through on them. Oh, I had grand plans… never mind that I was returning to work  after a glorious entire year off, and had two toddlers to chase after. I could never have anticipated the sheer exhaustion of being back in the 9 to 5 grind, the commute and combine that with the madness that a three and a one year old can concoct.

Here is a recap of my 2015 Beauty Resolutions and how they actually panned out:

I will wash my makeup brushes more often.

In 2015,  I continued using filthy brushes on a regular basis. I think I probably washed them maybe a half a dozen times through the entire calendar year (I am probably over-estimating here folks). I even blogged about the importance of beauty hygiene… what a hypocrite! The bad news – I am disgusting. The good news- I am the only person using my brushes so my filth stays within my own face’s ecosystem.

I will stop picking at my cuticles and hangnails.

I actually Sally-Hansen-Cuticle-Massage-Creammade a concerted effort to pack cuticle cream with me at work and even apply it while I sit in horrendous traffic on the 404 on my way into work. Even remembering to do this once a week once the colder weather hits made a tremendous difference. I haven’t even had a manicure since early fall and I am not ashamed of my cuticles as I type this.

I will apply a foot cream.

All I can say about this failed promise is Heaven for my feetyuck. Without regular TLC from my pedicurist at Yen Nails, my feet still look like a shoeless Hobbit. It is not for lack of product selection in my home. I struggle with finding the right time to apply it. Right out of the shower would be an ideal time, but I am often in a hurry and forget. Bedtime also seems like it would be a good time to put it on, but if I have been wearing stockings or tights to work it can make for a stinky foot (don’t cringe, we all have had this happen), it feels gross to rub cream into a smelly foot. Try again in 2016 I guess….

I will say goodbye/ adios, au revoir to anything in my collection that is older than my children.

I still have the eye shadows pictured because I have a weird emotional attachment to them. I have, however, purged a TON of products. Anything that had an altered texture, colour or smell was tossed. Anything that I really struggled to embrace was tossed. Anything that caused my eyes to turn bright red was tossed. What did I keep? Anything that I bought on a vacation that I wouldn’t get in Canada, or items that I now deem artifacts and as soon as the “Museum of Beauty History” is created I will be a main contributor and hailed as a beauty hero. So there- that’s progress!

I will find a reason to wear false eyelashes once a month.More of my hoarding

I am actually wearing a set of false lashes right now in anticipation of starting off 2016 right. Last year, I think I rocked some falsies maybe twice… a far cry from the dozen times I was aiming for. However, the one time I wore them I was brilliant with them! I was attending a special event at the Toronto Benefit Cosmetics Boutique which of course called for some extra – girly glamour.  After the event,  I couldn’t wait until I got home to take off my lashes so I peeled them off in a Starbucks parking lot while a horrified bystander in a car across from me witnessed the act. You’re welcome lady!

I was driving the car that usually my husband drives so I hid each lash strip so when he would reach to lower the visor or adjust the vent he would accidentally brush his hand on it. I imagined him mistaking the lash momentarily for a big hairy spider and him screaming aloud in horror. Well, he foiled my brilliant plan not even noticing either of them and this made me so sad. But you have to admit that that lady got a show and the pre-meditative nature of a spider scare count as at least 10 wears. So, in reality I was thisclose to meeting my goal.

I will use my lipliner more often.

Oh this a Beauty Resolution that I totally won! I have grown to adore my lip liners and love creating depth and highlight by using my liners. I have added a half dozen or so new lipliners to my collection (hoarder!) and use one on an almost daily basis. I absolutely love the crisp definition that a liner adds to a red lip, or shading the corners and sketching into the center a little to create an ombre effect. Yes. This was the winning Resolution!

So, that’s my 2015 Beauty Resolution recap. Stay tuned for the 2016 ones coming soon…. In the meantime, Foxes please tell me what item or technique did you add to your regime in 2015?

Product Review: Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick

photo 1-3I have been seeing Too Faced beauty products all over my social media lately. Up until now, I had only used the “Better Than Sex” Mascara as recommended to me by my friend Kelly. It was a lovely mascara, and it is high time I tried more of this little brand. When I saw the videos/ pictures of Melted Lipstick, I thought the pigmentation looked so rich and beautiful and since I am always on the look out for highly pigmented lip colours, I thought that this will be the next thing I try from Too Faced.

I actually had a difficult time deciding which one to pick up. All of the colours were luscious and enticing! I settled on “Melon” after a long internal debate, and figured it will be great throughout the spring and summer months.

Pigmentation – Wowzas these babies have colour that goes on and looks like perfection! I have been so disappointed in the past with glosses and lipsticks that do not go on like they look or gradually change over time your lips. This goes on rich and gives full coverage immediately, and if this is your thing I would highly suggest trying these out.

Texture – Typically long wear lip sticks are pretty dry and make your lips feel like paper in no time. This has a gloss texture going on, and remains comfy as long as it is on. One of the best textures I have tried in a long wear lip products.

Wearability – I would rate this as a medium for wearability. If you did not know already, there is always a trade off when it comes to lip products – generally the longer it stays on the drier if feels, and the more moist it feels the more quickly it wears off. This is a cozy medium for all areas as far as I am concerned. It stays on long enough without any of the typical long wear side effects likes flaking or peeling off.

photo-7Application – Often things that comes in tubes are awful to apply, but Too Faced has really given a lot of though to this gem of a product. The applicator tip is fine enough to get into every area of your lips without “globbing” the whole thing up and making a mess. They claim that there is no liner required, and I would agree with that claim 100%. Probably the only thing I would do is take a cotton swab and clean up around the lip line, and then apply concealer with a precision brush around it to give a super sharp look.

From their website:

Get the staying power of a stain, the intense color of a liquid lipstick and the high shine of a gloss in one long-wear formula. Using exclusive technology to keep cauldrons of molten lipsticks liquid and creamy, Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick comfortably coats lips in bursts of intense, high-impact, super rich, saturated color that lasts for hours.

  • Too Faced Co-Founder and Creative Director Jerrod Blandino had never seen lipstick more beautiful, intense, rich and glossy than when it’s in its melted form in the cosmetic labs. With this inspiration, we created a lipstick liquified so it doesn’t lose its pigment or shine while keeping a comfortable, flexible and cushiony wear.
  • Provides high-impact, super rich, saturated pigment in a long-wear formula.
  • Precision tip applicator to allow for a clean, effortless application each time (no liner needed!)
  • Vegan-Friendly

Overall…. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!! I will be picking up more shades in the near future for sure. Love love love. Can’t wait for more!

What about all of you Foxes…. do you like a fresh pop of colour as the temperature starts to rise? Or do stick to neutrals year round?

Return Of A Forgotten Friend

Oh Pam- those lips were once revered and then just as quickly shamed.

Disclaimer: I am not happy with the pictures I took of myself for this article. Please forgive the lack of quality as I was rushed to post and the weather was not working for me. Usually I like photos by a window in the natural light, but it is crazy overcast here. I AM pleased with the writing quality though!

Lipliner is back, and in a big way. For some of you, maybe it never went away, and that is perfectly fine. It just fell off of the fashion radar as a “look” for a long time. Since the 90’s when Pam Anderson’s signature look became dated, we have been secretly sporting our lipliner in shades that perfectly matched our lips, matched our lipsticks or were even clear. Our poor little lipliner friend really got a bad rap.

Then, Kylie Jenner Instagrammed those lips. You know, the ones that are created with the magic of makeup? I cannot say that previous sentence with total conviction since I am not 100% buying that her new look completely washes off at night, but that is neither here nor there. Whatever it takes to get those lips, I do believe that this little Jenner has single handedly resuscitated a beauty category that had previously been shamed to the point of invisibility.

Kylie before and after

Fact: Lipliner is a very practical little product that is often under rated for it’s accomplishments. It helps to prevent your lipstick from hopping the fence into no-man’s land and making you look like a hot mess when you wear a bright or glossy lip. It helps the longevity of your lipstick if you apply it all over your lips as a base. It can alter or brighten lipsticks when used as a base. It really is the unsung hero of your makeup bag.

Lipliner is being touted once again as a game-changing shape shifter that can make a perfect pout out of even the most deflated lips. Overlining is a thing again, and this is where you cheat a little (or a lot) and apply your lipliner outside of your natural lip line to pump it up.

I have tried it a few times to see what it looked like on me, and it felt messy. Like when you eat something greasy and don’t have a napkin kind of messy. I guess I am just too used to colouring within the lines to do this, or maybe I need to stick to very matte lip products to feel comfortable with it. I felt I was seconds away from someone snapping a photo of me and ending up on a Pinterest board for bad makeup. I will share my results at the end. Reluctantly.

Back to overlining and the steps you would need to be very diligent with to succeed:

  1. Exfoliate your lips and just around you lip line. You will need a smooth, flake free surface to work with, especially when employing this trickery (can you tell I am not a fan of this look yet?).
  2. Moisturize lips. Since you are in search of bigger and better, go for a product that is designed to pump up your lips like Duwop Lip Venom or Lip Fusion.
  3. Use a long-wearing concealer on your lip line and around your mouth to concealer your natural lip line and to give the lipliner something to grab onto. Avoid a creamy concealer here, probably the best thing would be a liquid that dries quickly. I used Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer.
  4. Now, apply the lipliner. If you are going for the Kylie Jenner look, use a nude (dark pink or brownish) colour and create an outline just slightly outside of your lips. I can’t really tell you what I used since I did not have what I wanted to use in my own collection, I ended up using a darker one than I wanted to (and it is a discontinued shade anyhow).
  5. When you get to the bow of your lip, this is the part that will make or break your look. Dot above the lip where you want the bow to be, and then slowly sketch it in to connect the dots to the rest of your lip line. This is easier said than done, but I imagine gets easier with practice.
  6. Now fill in the entire lip inside the lines with a colour so that you can’t see you original shape. Again, if it is the Kylie Jenner look you are after use a nude slightly lighter than the lip liner. This way the liner will create a counter and redefine your lip line. I used a combination of a pinky-brown lipstick and the lipliner.

OK – now here is a reluctant share of my 2nd and 3rd overlining attempts. I have a full lip to begin with so this looks comical to me. The photo makes it look like I am pushing my lips out and making a duck face, but my expression was very similar to the one in the picture taken earlier the day.

Natural lip picture taken in the daytime with natural light. The overlined lip at night with inside light and similar facial expression.

My final attempt. I think it looks a little better, but I am not likely going to be revisiting this look on myself anytime soon.

I can certainly see the appeal in doing it if you are lacking a little, but I am concerned about how it would wear, how much you would have to touch it up, and how you would explain it to your date if they should spend the night. I guess it’s no different than any other makeup trick, push up bra, hair extensions, spanx or stilettos…

So Foxes, what do you think about overlining? Would you try it out? Do you even use lipliner at all? Is this little whiz a staple in your arsenal?

Day 3: Foxy Advent Calendar Tip Of The Day

Well it’s day 3 Foxes… time for a new beauty tip. This tip comes courtesy of Amy Pearl. In the beauty biz for the past 7 years, Amy Pearl currently works as a freelance makeup artist in Toronto, and has also worked as a stand-up comedian.

“Dab foundation and powder around the lips to seal in the lip liner.  Sharpen the tip of a lip liner and fill in lips with it before applying lipstick. This way you will never have to re-touch your lipstick when at an event or at work or after a double cheeseburger (seriously).”

Thanks for today’s beauty tip Amy Pearl.  With New Year’s Eve upcoming we need all the help we can get keeping our lipstick on!

Foxes – what are some of your tricks for long lasting lip colour? Comment below to share.
