The Hottest Lip Trend Hits Mass Cosmetics

Revlon simply never lets me down. It is a consistent and reliable brand, with product offerings at an affordable price point. When it comes to their lip products, I would dare say they rival the most prestigious brands. They are constantly innovating and on trend, while deeply rooted in their classics (Coffee Bean or Toast of New York anyone?).

CaptureI saw a displayer of their newest lip product in a drugstore. Since it was Revlon lip, I stopped dead in my tracks to check it out. The colour I wanted was sold out, but as luck would have it, someone came and filled it while I was there, so I just had to buy it! See? The Cosmetic gods were telling me to buy it so it’s not hoarding. IMG_8300

The Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor goes on like a lip gloss and feels lovely. The scent is actually quite delicious as well ( a little fruity). It goes on remarkably well with a beautiful pigmentation. At first it looks a little shiny, but in no time it sets matte. I bought only one shade (aptly named Addiction), but will be returning for the rest shortly.

I would describe the wearability as medium… it stays on well but isn’t super long lasting. This suits me just fine as I found that this is a blend of all things great from both moisturizing and long – wearing lipsticks, which isn’t something I have seen before. Kudos to Revlon for another fantastic lip product, and I will be back to the store to pick up the rest of the shades soon!

Have you used a Revlon lip product before? What are your thoughts?

Foxy Face Needs… (the Face version)

I’ve tried so many things over the years, and it is a rare occasion that I would purchase an item more than once. More than twice? That’s practically unheard of. But, there are a few of these items that do exist! I thought it would be fun to share my MUST HAVE items. These are the ones that are always on my list, and that I am grappling to get my hands on as another one is running low. It is not unusual for me to stock up on these items when there is a special promotion and have my beauty cupboards full of my own personal “overstock”. I am a wee bit of a hoarder, I will freely admit that (follow me on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook to see the evidence).

MUST HAVE red Rubber Stamp over a white background. For this post, I am going to cover off my must-have FACE items. These are not only my go-to items, but the ones that I have recommended to friends, family and customers and even some of you over the years. These are products that I consider to be the essentials to my own collection, and I would never want to be without.

Biotherm Aquasource Deep Hydration Replenishing Gel for Normal/ Combination Skinbiotherm-aquasource-visual – I love this face moisturizer. I have loved it since I worked at a Shoppers Drug Mart on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton when it was first launched. At the time (mid to late 90’s?) when this delicious cream hit the market,  there was really NOTHING like it out there. It had a cool and refreshing texture that made it feel like you were bathing your face in a tropical waterfall (too far?) and a divine smell that I will never tire of. This classic is one that I return to time and again, and I especially love to pick it up when there is a bonus set with extras included (like deluxe size cleanser and toner). This cream is primarily a hydrating moisturizer, and does not contain much in the way of reparation ingredients, but I love it so much I will use it in the day time with an SPF layered underneath, and use a more anti-aging specific product at night. Often replicated by other brands, nothing has ever come close to the amazing texture and hydration of my precious Aquasource.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place Makeup lauder– This is pretty much like a love story, so get your tissues ready. Just kidding, but it does span over a decade and we finally get together after way too much time apart.

I first met this baby back in the mid-90’s. At the time Ultima II Wonderwear and Revlon Colorstay were rocking the foundation world with their long lasting formulations that provided a flawless face. I loooved Wonderwear but it exited Canada around 1996-97 and I was left sad and confused. The Revlon Colorstay Foundation filled in as a weaker, but far more affordable version, but I was never truly satisfied. I found a magazine insert to get my free deluxe sample of Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation at the Bay, so I decided to check it out. They pumped a little vial full of my shade and sent me on my way to try it out. I. LOVED. IT. I used that vial up and scraped out the insides with a cotton swab to take every last wee bit out.

At the time, I could not get this makeup at the retailer that I worked for (aka no discount), so I did not permit myself the luxury of using it again for years. I bounced around from brand to brand, always hoping to find my true match once again. Around 2011, I found out that my retailer would be carrying Estee Lauder products. I had totally forgot about that foundation, sort of like a long lost love that you knew in the back of your mind was always perfect for you but through a series of missed connections, you just were never able to be together. I casually entered one of our stores to check out the counter, sort of like Facebook lurking an old flame’s profile. I looked around the counter, I looked at the eye shadows, and some of the other makeup, and then I looked at that bottle of Double Wear. Oh, I looked and I longed for what we had once had many years ago.el_sku_Y9H072_558x768_0

A demonstrator from the company asked if I needed help. I was a little nervous! I couldn’t tell her about how this was the ONE for me a long time ago, and how my cheapness and need for discounted products made me turn my back on it. I felt as though I had betrayed it, and that maybe after all these years, it would no longer light up my life like it once did. The lady had me remove my foundation, she colour matched me, and then put it all over my face once we determined the shade. It was like we were never apart! It melted into my skin immediately and camouflaged my imperfections flawlessly. The seamless blending, the impeccable coverage, the formula that lasted all day –  this foundation truly understood my needs. It was an exceptional match made in heaven. THEN, the lady introduced me to the foundation’s sibling – Double Wear Stay In Place Powder Makeup. A liquid AND a powder foundation that meet all of my complicated requirements and demanding little heart’s conditions? They had me at hello.

I am now in a polyamorous relationship with both. They are my sister-wife version of makeup. Sometimes I like one, sometimes the other, and on days when I want absolutely flawless looking skin, I use both. These are items that will ALWAYS be in my makeup bag (desk) and I pray to the Lauder gods that they never take them away.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O sensibio_h20_250ml08_gd_04– With one of these sold every three seconds worldwide, this cleansing water is clearly a must- have for a lot of people! I love this stuff so much and I usually have about 2-3 on the go at all times. I keep one in my bathroom so I can easily and gently remove my eye makeup at night. I have super sensitive eyes and they react to so many things, so it was nice to find something that doesn’t sting or burn when I use it. I also use it some nights to take off ALL my makeup. It usually takes 8-10 cotton soaked pads to get it all off, but when I don’t want to splash water on my face and wake myself up too much, this is my go-to makeup remover. I keep one at my makeup desk too so when I am applying makeup, I can quickly clean up any mistakes with it. A cotton swab soaked on one side with the Sensibio quickly evens out my cat eye or cleans up my lip line. I seriously have at least 10 bottles of this in my house right now.

s1619576-main-heroBite Beauty Agave Lip Masque – I won’t go into too much detail since I already raved about this product extensively here, but I will update you! I have since bought the Champagne shade and it is so pretty and subtle. The packaging has improved too and it is not as stiff as the metal type tube I had before but rather is a plastic one that is much easier to use. This is the newest item included in my roster of beauty must-haves, so I will award it the Rookie of The Year in my makeup bag. Lovely, lovely product.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks – Coffee Bean. Blackberry. Toast of New York. Fire & Ice. Pink In The Afternoon. These are all iconic shades that have belonged in my collection throughout the years (1987 to present). I love the look and feel of these lushly pigmented lipsticks. These formulations and shades transcend time and trends, and yet always seem to be on point. I used to play a game with a friend when we worked together in a cosmetic department. She would hold up a Super Lustrous Lipstick tester and I would name the shade just by looking at the colour of the bullet. I love that almost every single shade I have ever used in this line still exists. This is great for the average consumer because it means that there are not too many pesky discontinuations and you don’t have to run around looking for a new lipstick every few years. I have many lipsticks in my collection, but you can bet good money that I will always have a half dozen or so Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks kicking around. They are affordable enough that you can pick up a handful in the latest trendy shades and classic enough to wear for years, even decades. A definite must-have!

So my Foxy Friends, those are a few of my must have items for my face. What are yours? Comment below ’cause I wanna know!

Mission Possible: Red Lips

photo-17On of the most popular questions I get asked is, “How do I find a red lipstick that works for me?” This is not an easy question to answer as many people are really asking me to make them change their perception about red lipstick and who should be wearing it, and to make them see themselves in a different light in which they are glamorous and bold.

First and foremost, anyone can pull off a red lipstick. Part of it is choosing the right shade and applying it well, and then another part is pulling a whole ‘look’ together around the lips. Like you probably wouldn’t wear a pair of glamorous high heeled shoes with sweat pants, you will want to put a wee bit of simple effort into prepping the rest of your face to embrace the red lips. And then a really huge component is confidence – you must feel it to rock it!

Choosing the Red

I’m not gonna lie, there are so many options out there! There are many brands, formulations, and coverages out there. Lipstick wise you find mattes, creamy formulas, stains, full coverage, sheer coverage. Then there are glosses that offer full coverage or are more sheer, with sparkles, without sparkles…. Options for days (or daze?).

Rather than go over every single option, I’d rather focus on a few go-to shades that tend to work well for most. This means they are a truer red rather than orange based or cooler tones of red. These are the more “neutral” reds which will look better on more people. I personally love an orangey red, but realize that most people would find it too over the top.

When you go out on your mission, go prepared with well- moisturized lips free of any colour. You want to hit up a place that allows you to test products, but also one which has good hygienic practices in place. If trying a lipstick on your lips in a store is not for you, then you can try it on your finger tip and hold it up to your face for an idea of how it will look. Ask the salesperson to help you. He or she should listen to what you are asking for and offer a few suggestions. Take your time trying the lipsticks and consider applying it lightly –  build the intensity slowly so you can see what it looks like to have a little bit on and what it looks like to wear it on full blast.

I’ve read many articles and blogs on red lipstick and there was a shade that was mentioned time after time after time. I was actually surprised that:  A) I did not already own this shade, and B) I actually had never heard of it. You have to understand this was a shock to me as I love lipstick and reds so I couldn’t believe this one was so popular and I was clueless!

MAC - Ruby Woo

MAC – Ruby Woo

The shade is “Ruby Woo” from MAC. I marched my butt to the closest MAC counter to try it on for myself. Touted as the perfect red that suits all skin tones, hair colours and even ages, I was so excited to get this hot commodity on my lips. At the counter I opted to line my lips with a liner that matched my natural lip tone. Upon applying the lipstick I noticed that it is very matte. This is a good thing with a red because anything too creamy or glossy can migrate and look a little sloppy. Once I had applied it, I decide to use a tiny amount of MAC Lipglass (lip gloss) over top to add a bit of moisture and shine. This lipstick was FAB-U-LOUS (and very noticeable)! I was in the mall and as I walked around several people complimented me on the colour. I had already eaten lunch, but it stayed on even after I ate supper much later that day. Although the intensity had faded, it was still very on. I will be returning to purchase this little gem soon!

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge

Shiseido Lacquer Rouge

Another red I love and wear often is from Shiseido. Their Lacquer Rouge line is a rich liquid lipstick with a wonderful applicator that makes it easy to fit to your lips. This formula goes on like a lipgloss, but with a lipstick finish. I own several shades from this line but wear Lacquer Rouge Nocturne (RD607) lots. I love this red. It’s less bright than Ruby Woo, and it’s moisturizing yet stays where I put it.

Quo Luminous Gloss Stick Flare

Quo Luminous Gloss Stick Flare

If you are a little more conservative, run out and try the Quo Luminous Gloss Stick in Flare. This red is delivered by means of a jumbo pencil, and glides on effortlessly. The beauty of this one is that you can apply just a little and then spread over your entire lips with a finger, providing you with a sheer glossy red lip that doesn’t jump out.  I actually use this one quite often as it moisturizes my lips when I wear it and I can really adjust the strength of colour depending on how I apply it. The one downside to this is that it is not terribly long – wearing, but it is so easy to apply that touch ups are a breeze. Don’t forget to buy a big pencil sharpener for this one!

Application is Crucial With Red

Applying red onto your lips becomes a bit of a science to get the effect you really want. It starts with preparation- you want your lips to be smooth and moisturized without flakes. See my lip care post for some moisturizing tips. The day you are wearing red, you may want to start off in the morning by gently brushing your lips with your toothbrush after you brush your teeth. Then, apply a lip moisturizer right after and do other stuff giving it a chance to soak in.

When you’ve done the rest of your makeup and maybe even your hair and it’s time to put on the red, gently blot off any excess moisture on your lips with a tissue. I would then highly recommend lining your lips with a lip liner. Liner acts like a barrier that will help keep the lipstick in place, and it will provide definition to your lips. With reds, this is a very good idea since you don’t want it feathering around the lip line and looking like a hot mess. My preference is to line lips with a liner that is the same shade as your lips or even clear rather than a red liner. This way if your lipstick wears off you aren’t left with a red ring all around your lips. If you choose a red lip liner that matches your lipstick, fill in the entire lip with it after you make the line. This will help keep your lipstick on longer, and you also won’t be left with that weird red ring around your lips should your lipstick wear off. Keep in mind that using a red liner underneath your lipstick will probably also intensify it.

Once liner is applied, it’s time to put on the lipstick. There are several application methods – direct from the tube, applying with your finger, applying with a lip brush. Direct from the tube is fastest, but for ultimate precision a lip brush will allow you best control. You can either use the brush to get lipstick from the tube and then out onto your lips, or put some on directly from the tube and then use the brush to precisely fill in the countours. If you would like a hint of the colour rather than wearing it full blast, smudge a tiny amount onto centre of your lips and then spread out over rest of your lips with your finger.

When applying a red lipstick, keep in mind this is not a time to race, you want to ensure application is tidy and clean. I like to keep a cotton swab handy with some eye makeup remover. I will dip the swab into a tiny amount of the remover and then trace around the outside of my lips to clean up the line perfectly and erase anything that went over. Finally, I like to take a little of my face powder on a wedge sponge and precisely trace around the outside of my lips to give it a perfect finish.

The Rest of Your Face

As mentioned earlier, to achieve the best result wearing the red lipstick you should put some attention into the rest of your face makeup too. A little foundation or powder to even out complexion and cover any redness (redness in skin will be amplified when wearing red lips), a little eye makeup and some bronzer and/or blush. This will set the scene for you to embrace those red lips a lot more. See my blog on a Classic Holiday Look for further tips.
